Hantaviruses are a family of RNA viruses (genus Orthohantavirus) carried mainly by rodents — deer mice, bank voles, striped field mice. The virus is shed in their urine, saliva and droppings, and humans typically get infected by inhaling aerosolized particles from contaminated dust.
First identified near the Hantan River in Korea in the late 1970s after an outbreak among UN troops during the Korean War, hantaviruses cause two distinct severe diseases: HFRS (Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome) — dominant in Eurasia — and HPS (Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome) — dominant in the Americas, with the deadly Sin Nombre virus famously identified in the 1993 Four Corners outbreak in the US Southwest.
Roughly 150,000–200,000 cases are reported globally every year, mostly in China. Case-fatality rates range from ~1% (mild HFRS) up to ~36–40% for HPS. There is no widely available vaccine and no specific antiviral — supportive care in an ICU is the standard treatment. $HANTAVIRUS is the meme; the virus itself is very real, and that's exactly the point.
